Greetings from Coniston and Kathryn Orton

Hello at last,

I have been collecting some images for you of my neighbourhood so you can see where I am. This is my house, I have a studio at the back. The tree out the front is a Jacaranda which is just about to blossom. It will be covered in purple flowers soon, I’ll send you another photo when it looks its best, and one of the studio then too.

14 Harold Street with Morriss the cat

Other points of interest include…

The view to the north, over Wollongong

The steel works, just over the hill to the south

and the grain terminal and new car delivery area

More suburbia further south to Cringila

Mt Kembla (where Liz lives) from Coniston Heights

The view to the east from Coniston Heights, with passing ocean traffic

and Coniston United Church in Bridge St. Any denomination can use this church

I’ve grown to love these suburban views, there are many variations of them here as Wollongong is a hilly place. My prints might end up being about them. I have only done drawings so far, but a friend said one of those reminded her of Italy. I’ve been to Citta di Castello and visited the Typografia Donati, which I thought was wonderful, back in 2oo0 and would love to visit again some time.

In the meantime…here is one of my drawings. It’s the view from Wollongong West TAFE college (not far from my place) where many of us have studied and worked in the printmaking studios.

Looking South from Wollongong West

Now that I’ve started communicating I will keep it up.

Ciao

Kathryn

Merci beaucoup Kathryn…j’aime beaucoup ton dessin! That seems like too long ago that you went on your trip to Italy with Lucia, is it that long ago…mon dieu, time flies. And,can you put in some images of your furniture, s’il tu plait?

Enjoyed the photographic views of Coniston and your drawing with all those ‘exotic’ shapes of Australian suburbia. The photo of the tiny church with tree and telegraph pole is great too – such a contrast to Italian churches! Wonder what our Umbrian friends will make of it?

Hi Kath….revisiting your home and the views from Coniston make me a little homesick for the Illawarra. Your prints, drawing and sculpture are always somewhere on view in my house. In August, I hope to have a show again in the Illawarra, so I’ll let you know closer to the time. People enjoy your “Expecting Guests” print so much!
